In the picture to the left you see two points A and B and a horizontal line.
Three questions that can be answered by the same strategy:

1:
You want to run as fast as possible from A to B.
You run with a constant speed in the upper part (over the horizontal line) of the area and with another constant speed in the lower part (below the horizontal line) of the are. Where should you place a point C on the horizontal line for crossing the horizontal line to run as fast as possible the path ACB?
In the control window (to the right of the scrollbar) you see a number 1.5.
This means that you run a factor 1.5 slower in the lower part than in the upper part of the area.
This number can be changed by the help of the scrollbar.

2:
You are going to make a pipeline from A to B.
It's different costs to make the pipeline in the two halves of the area (over and below the horizontal line). Where should you place a point C on the horizontal line to make the cheapest pipeline ACB?
In the control window (to the right of the scrollbar) you see a number 1.5.
This means that it's a factor 1.5 more expensive to make the pipeline in lower part then in the upper part of the area.
This number can be changed by the help of the scrollbar.

3:
Sending light from A, at what point C on the horizontal will the light be refracted to the point B? In the control window (to the right of the scrollbar) you see a number 1.5.
This means that the index of refraction is factor 1.5 higher in the lower part than in the upper part of the area.
This number can be changed by the help of the scrollbar.
