Participation is important because the main pedagogical approach in current formal higher educational studies is socio-constructive. That means that you have to work in groups, at least occasionally.
This approach forces the students to work with the information at hand in learning activities for deeper understanding and avoid shallow learning. This can be achieved where learners in groups construct their own knowledge in a social manner with each learner controlling his/her own learning.
