The independent learner
Regard yourself as your own company.
You invest time and money in order to increase your competence and skills.
The competition with other 'personal' companies is tough - and continuous - until you retire.

One of the wisest things to invest in is therefore to learn how to learn - fast and more efficiently.
When you decide to venture into the competence industry there is a clear expectation that you are updated.
Life-long learning is not an option. It is a must.

  1. Now, finally, you have the chance to become an independent learner.
Are you ready for the responsibility?
You should regard yourself as being on the way to establish and develop your own private company: you work in order to develop your own company's expertise and competence.
Since you are the only one in the company (so far), you are the sole responsible for development.
Your personal small company should be a learning organisation that continuously strives to be professionally updated.
One of the more important things you learn is therefore to learn how to learn - more and faster.
Building your own company is like venturing out on a shaky bridge. But it is most likely worth it.

  1. Do not just let it be a dream, but start to work on it NOW.

Many students are only present with their bodies and do not work with the learning material and information/lectures that are made available for them.
They have a notion that a student can sit passively and absorb knowledge that is served.
This is probably a poor strategy.
  1. Reflect on this statement:

'A lecture, an article or book is not knowledge but information.
Knowledge, understanding and insight is something you build up in your own mind by working with the information'.

If you agree, it means that you must be active to learn.
Experience and knowledge are not passively absorbed.
    You must be active.
You must choose to modify or change your study habits if they are not adequate for the challenge.
To change a habit takes time and effort.

Even if you are responsible for your own learning, it usually pays off to cooperate with others. Join study groups or get a "study buddy". Working with others forces you to formulate your understanding in your own words, and facilitates deeper understanding.
