Classifying knowledge
There are several ways to classify knowledge.

Declarative knowledge
According to the classical Greek tradition, people have different degrees of 'declarative or factual knowledge' - knowledge that could be used when one wanted to inform others about something.

'Techne' or skills and practical competence, the next level of knowledge, would enable people to perform something in practice.

'Fronesis' - wisdom, was the third and highest level.

At this level, people had the sufficient knowledge, skills and competence to make right decisions and implement wise and insightful measures to the benefit of themselves and for society. Whatever your definition of knowledge is - it should be evident that to cram and 'parrot' a text is not good enough for studies at higher levels.

  1. DIKW
Another way of classifying knowledge is depicted in the DIKW-pyramid: Data - Information - Knowledge - Wisdom:
Data can be structured to information.
Data and information can be disseminated.
Knowledge and understanding must be built in each person or within a group
