Reading strategies and techniques
Students should practice to be conscious and critical readers

This means that they:
  • 'warm up' by reading the table of contents, headings, looking at pictures, tables and graphics
  • check the year of publication, read something about the author and read the preface
  • ask him or herself what he / she knows or thinks she knows about the subject and compares this knowledge with what is presented (This is an important part of the learning process)
  • are (pro) active by asking questions:
- what do I want to know more about?
- what am I uncertain of?
- what does this statement mean?
- is this documented?
- is the reference reliable?
- how controversial is this fact?
- who is the author, or what interests does he or she represent?

  • take notes and organise them
  • select reading strategies that match the content and own goal
